The final episode of, “The Language of the Heart,” is all about feelings and how to let them go. Our feelings, or emotions, are just energy in motion and are a normal part of being human. However, the typical ways people react to their emotions (not the healthy ways) include:
- Suppressing/Denying/Ignoring – trying to control our emotions so they don’t control us often leads to physical illnesses
- Expressing (Talking/Yelling/Screaming) – talking about our feelings might seem to make us feel better, but the more energy & attention we give to our feelings by complaining about them, the more of those feelings we are creating
- Escaping – this is where addictions of all kind come into play
But, in this week’s episode we talk about the healthy process of feeling, surrendering, and releasing our emotions to the Lord. Just as thoughts are meant to be thought, feelings are meant to be felt. When we don’t feel and release our emotions, we get stuck – personally, spiritually, and relationally.
The process of emotional regulation and maturity means feeling our feelings (without judgment), giving them unconditional acceptance (they are not right or wrong, they just are), and giving them to Jesus (allowing His peace to replace them).
This practical process of not letting our emotions rule us is simple, but not necessarily easy!
